Back with an update! The past week has been full of mostly slow mornings and relaxing days getting settled into my room here in Germany, and getting over jet leg. Due to a snowstorm in Iceland, my first flight was delayed causing my layover at KEF to be very brief, and resulting in my checked bag getting stuck there. After a few days of waiting and a little bit of an adventure, I got it back today! Huge thanks to Rachel (my aunt but we’ll say more like cousin) for letting me wear her clothes and use her things😄
My bag was set to be delivered today by a courier service, but a little after noon I received an email saying they could not deliver it, so they’d try again tomorrow. We tried calling the number listed with no luck. Thanks to my AirTag I could see the bag wasn’t too far, so Rachel and I, along with her two little ones hopped in the car to track it down. We drove to the AirTag’s location and found a delivery guy in front of a warehouse to talk to. He directed us to someone else inside. From there, it was pretty straightforward! We chatted with him, found my bag, and presented my passport for proof of ID.
Rachel and Lukas (her husband) took me exploring through Magdeburg for a bit on Sunday. They explained some of the history here, including how Breiter Weg or the “Broadway of Germany” was once located here, but it was destroyed with WWII and never rebuilt the same. We explored Park am Fürstenwall, seeing an old wall and tunnel system that had been buried up until ~20 years ago. We then walked to the Dom St. Mauritius und Katharina or “the Dome”. The architecture was truly beautiful. Following that, we went to Grüne Zitadelle or “the Dr. Seuss house” as Rachel calls it. It’s a relatively new abstract pink building that sits along Breiter Weg. It has all sorts of eccentric designs, different windows, and colorful sculptures or beams – hence it looking like it’s straight out of a Dr. Seuss book. To wrap it all up, I tried my first Döner in a little hole in the wall restaurant on our walk to church. Would recommend!
I haven’t done a large amount of site-seeing yet. Rather the last few days have consisted of attending a few gatherings with Rachel and Lukas, meeting some great people, and eating delicious food. I also managed to accidentally set off one of the anti-theft sensors when leaving the grocery store on one of my first solo trips😅 Overall, it’s been a great first week and I look forward to the next couple months here!
Tschüss,
Kam
